Is Holm Oak A Good Tree For Bonsai?

There are a large number of varieties of oak tree and they can all be a little different, so I will be talking about only the Holm Oak here.

The Holm Oak is an evergreen oak tree that originates from the Mediterranean area, but can actually now be found across most of Europe.

Oak trees in general are not that popular in bonsai, but you can find them being used and you can find holm oak among these.

I have been growing a Holm Oak from seed for a few years. You can follow its development in my Holm Oak Bonsai Progression.

Is Holm Oak A Good Species for Bonsai?

I think in general this species is okay for bonsai, I think with the right material, you can end up with an excellent tree.

Holm oak does have a lot of great attributes that make it very suitable for bonsai. It is very slow growing, but it is tough and does responds to bonsai work.

However, they can be a little fussy at times, so they are not the easiest trees to work with and maybe not ideal for a beginner.

They could easily work as a small tree, but I feel they would work best as a medium to large trees. I have been growing one from seed and it’s been painfully slow.

If you where to find an already establish trunk you would be on your way to having a great tree. A great trunk is going to work really well with the foliage and give you a lot of character and interest, which is exactly what you want form a bonsai.

Is Holm Oak Foliage Good For Bonsai?

The leaves on holm oaks are very cool. The Latin name is Quercus Ilex, which some of you might recognise the “ilex” part from holly trees.

This is because the leaves look very similar to holly leaves, so you might hear the holm oak referred to as the holly oak.

The leaves are a reasonable size, not massive, but not tiny. They can reduce through pruning but I feel with a medium to large size tree they are going to look perfectly in proportion no matter what.

The internode length can also be pretty good. I have found my leaves to be quite close together and I have not done anything to encourage this, which is exactly what you want from a tree you are using as bonsai.

Is A Holm Oaks Growth Rate Good For Bonsai?

The growth rate is super slow. Oaks in general are seen as these old wise trees and they get that way by growing very slowly for many years. The holm oak is no different.

You also have to factor in that they are a Mediterranean tree, so they like a lot of light, which is something I do not get a lot of here in the UK.

I am sure this plays a huge role in why my tree is so slow; if you are somewhere else you may find they grow at a faster pace.

Response To Pruning

Holm oak will respond reliably to pruning. It will happily divide where you prune it and the new growth will be smaller, which is perfect for bonsai and will allow you to build a good structure when you are building out a tree.

They will also back bud, which is helpful, but I have not had much experience with this yet to know exactly how aggressive they are with this.

From my understanding they will grow from stumps, so they should be able to handle hard pruning and be able to bud back with no problems.

Ramification

The response to pruning and the fact that the new growth will get smaller and smaller means that it is easy to build ramification. It just might take a while to achieve this, since it is such a slow grower.

Is A Holm Oaks Styling Ability Good For Bonsai?

The holm oak is open to a number of different styles, being a broad leaf evergreen you will want to aim for something that is going to suit this style of tree. It will also depend on the material you are using, but they can make fantastic informal upright bonsais.

Wiring

You can wire a holm oak with no problem and it is something you probably will need to do. Their shoots are fairly flexible and you should be able to get the tree into the position you want.

You could probably just wire the main structure and then build the rest of the tree through clip and grow methods.

Is A Holm Oaks Fall Colours Good For Bonsai?

As the holm oak is evergreen, it does not change colour or drop its leaves like most of the other oaks. This makes it a pretty unique oak, but it does mean it will look the exact same all year round.

It also means that you do not get to see the winter silhouette where you can study at the branch structure.

This isn’t too much of a problem for bonsai, but it can be nice at times to see what is going on with your branching while the tree is developing.

However, having it in leaf all year round is pretty cool. Most evergreen bonsais are pines or junipers, so a holm oak can make a nice change form these.

Is A Holm Oaks Bark Good For Bonsai?

The bark on a holm oak is excellent and works very well as bonsai. When established it is very dark, almost black and is covered in cracks and is very craggy.

If you can get a tree with a good trunk, the bark will really make your tree stand out.

This type of bark is going to hide scars very well and is also going to allow you to create some excellent deadwood opportunities on the trunk. If you have a thick trunk adding some carvings and hollows may give extra character to your tree.

I would suggest that dead branches will not really work to well on a holm oak, These generally don’t look good on a broadleaf tree.

Are A Holm Oaks Roots Good For Bonsai?

The roots are what let the holm oak down as a bonsai. Pretty much all oaks get upset when you mess around with their roots.

You can still work on them and develop them; you just need to be cautious. I would treat them more like a pine, than your average deciduous tree.

Your aftercare needs to be excellent after reporting a holm oak as they are going to struggle a bit afterwards.

This is also probably why there are not a lot of very good mature holm oaks taken from the wild. It’s hard to transition a yamdori from the wild to a pot anyway, without it being a tree that hates having its roots disturbed.

Dealing with the roots is what makes them difficult to use as bonsai and is also what makes them difficult for beginners.

Are Holm Oaks Easy To Care For As Bonsai?

Generally caring for a holm oak is pretty easy. So long as they have a free draining soil and can get plenty of light, they should be happy. T

he only time you need to worry about them is when you are doing anything to their roots.

You can read more in my Holm Oak Bonsai Care Guide.

Conclusion

Holm oak is a great candidate for bonsai and given the right material, you can very easily end up with a fantastic tree.

It can be hard finding good material, but it is out there. Holm oaks tick a lot of the boxes when it comes to bonsai and apart from their roots being a little troublesome, they are fairly easy trees to deal with.

This can be said about most oaks and I hope their popularity rises, as they can be very cool trees.
