Trident Maples (Acer Buergerianum) and bonsai go very well together. There are a lot of maples that can very suitable for bonsai and I would argue that tridents are one of the best.
They may not have the finesse that some maples have, but they have an extra toughness and vigour that just makes them so easy to work with. There really are very few down sides to using a trident maple for bonsai.

Is A Trident Maple A Good Species for Bonsai?
Trident maples really are one of the best trees you can use for bonsai. They are very popular in Japan and across the world.
They grow fast and they are easy to care. They are really robust, can take a lot of work and they just respond to techniques perfectly. You can really build a world class tree using a trident maple.
They also propagate very easily which means that once you see how good one can be, you can very easily increase you collection.
Is A Trident Maples Foliage Good For Bonsai?
The tree gets its name from the shape of the leaves. They have 3 tips, like a trident spear and they are truly beautiful.
Leaf Size
Trident leaves are perfect for bonsai. They look great and are small. However, with pruning techniques you can really get them to become even smaller. I’ve seen some mame tridents with the tiniest leaves. They can really look fabulous.
This means they can be used for any size tree. No matter the size the tree is always going to look in proportion.
Internode Length
The internode length is also great. Again with pruning you can really get the length to reduce drastically. This will really allow for some nice compact growth and again will help keep things in proportion no matter the size of your tree.
Is A Trident Maples Growth Rate Good For Bonsai?
One of the reasons I prefer trident maples over any other maple is the fact they are really aggressive growers. This is very helpful for bonsai as you can quickly develop a tree compared to some other maples where it can take a lifetime.
You can very easily take a small tree and get it to thicken over a number of years and then once you are happy with its size, it is very easy to start ramifying them and building your bonsai.
Response To Pruning
Tridents will respond very well to pruning. They will reliably shoot out when you prune them and you can also use the bud pinching technique if you are trying to induce back budding.
Bud pinching is normally done when you are trying to build ramification and is a very effective technique. You can also partially or fully defoliate a trident maple if you trying to reduce leaf size or get more light into the centre of the tree to promote more back budding.
As they are just aggressive growers you may find that you are pruning several times a season.
Back Budding
Trident maples will back bud very easily. If you cut the tree back to almost nothing it will send new shoots out all over the place with no problems. If you are trying to get back budding along a branch you can use the bud pinching technique to activate these buds and build your structure.
Ramification
Due to a trident maples ability to back bud, grow small leaves and have short internodes you can really build up some excellent ramification. It is very easy to get a very dense tree.
You can really notice the difference in quality when you work with a trident. They just respond so well compared to other more course growing acers, like the sycamore. You can really tell why this tree is popular for bonsai. The results really speak for themselves.
Is A Trident Maples Styling Ability Good For Bonsai?
Being a deciduous tree you can style it many ways and they can all look good. The informal upright is probably the most common and for me, this is the best way. A bonsai can look very natural in this style.
Wiring
You can wire trident maples and depending on the style you are going for you may want to wire some branches in place. It is usually best to wire the trees initial structure and then use clip and grow to build out the rest of the tree.
You also need to watch the wire on tridents, as they can grow rather fast and cause the wire to bite.
Is A Trident Maples Fall Colours Good For Bonsai?
Autumn time is very special time of year for trident maples. You will get an epic display from them. The leaves will turn a mixture of red and yellow and it can be world class.
They are worth having one for this alone!
Is A Trident Maples Winter Silhouette Good For Bonsai?
The trident maple will drop all its leaves and allow you to see the skeleton of the tree over winter. If you have a well defined tree you will be able to enjoy the tree without its leaves. If you are still developing the tree you will be able to study the structure and see what needs worked on in the coming seasons.
Is A Trident Maples Bark Good For Bonsai?
Trident bark is pretty similar to other maples. It is quite thin and can be easily damaged. This is why you need to watch your wire as it will easily leave scars if it bites in.
This type of thin bark means that scars can take a while to heal. The tridents aggressive growth does mean they will heal faster and better than a Japanese maple, but it is still better to avoid this if you can.
Deadwood Opportunities
You should not have deadwood on a trident maple as this will not look good, but for a lot of deciduous trees carving can work. However, tridents seem to a bit a more elegant and carving is pretty uncommon on them.
If you had a really thick trunk you could maybe get away with it. It would depend on the tree, but for the most parts its best to not carve your trident.
I believe it is uncommon to see carving on tridents as we tend to look to Japan for our styles. They do not like carving deciduous trees. They prefer to try and keep a tree small and scar free, which is very hard to achieve and also takes a very long time. You will usually find most carving on deciduous trees is done on species that are not common in Japan.
Are A Trident Maples Roots Good For Bonsai?
Trident roots are extremely aggressive and you will find that you need to repot them often. They can take a lot of work and will grow back quickly.
This means you can very easily start to build a very nice root system and trunk flare which is exactly what we want from a tree we are using for bonsai.
Is A Trident Maple Easy To Care For As Bonsai?
