How Long Will It Take For A Bonsai To Recover From Pruning?

If you have just pruned your bonsai, you will probably be wondering how long it will be until it has recovered.

Unfortunately it is impossible to say exactly as there are so many different factors that can affect things, which I will go through below, but really after a couple a weeks you should see some sort of response from the tree that will let you know it is recovering in some way.

What Should Happen After Pruning?

If you want to know how long it is going to take to recover, I think it is important to know what actual “recovery”  looks like and what you should actually expect from your tree.

This is going to help you look out for the signs that it is responding positively.

Your tree may do a few different things such as leak sap, or die back, but these are not exactly positive, although, if this stops happening you can take that as a good sign that recovery has started.

However, the main thing you want to look for is new growth. This is going to show up as new buds. It will depend how and where you have pruned, but you should start to see new buds forming just below where you have pruned.

They may appear elsewhere too, but so long as there are some, that is a good sign. These are of course going to swell and eventually open and become new shoots and start growing from there.

It is usually at this point I am happy everything is going to be alright, but sometimes these shoots can die, but really you just want to keep seeing progress with the new growth, you can tell the difference between a healthy tree and a struggling one so you will know if everything is okay or not.

It Depends On The Health Of The Tree

Really the response from the tree and more importantly the time this takes, is all going to boil down to the health of the tree.

The healthier the tree, the sooner it will bounce back.

If your tree wasn’t doing so well you will find that it either takes a very long time to bounce back, or the new shoots will shoot quickly, but just be very weak looking and not really grow very well.

This is why it is really important to make sure you tree is at optimum health when you prune it as you will really set it back and it will take a long time to recover if it is not.

There is also a huge risk that the tree will just not bounce back, which means you have killed it, which is never a great experience.

It Depends On How Much You Pruned The Tree

How much you have pruned is going to also affect how long it takes the tree to respond and recover.

Any sort of pruning is going to weaken then tree. When you remove the leaves you are literally removing the energy making part of the system, so it only make sense that the heavier your pruning, the longer it will take to recover.

If you just remove a few bits here and there, the tree will not really lose any energy production potential, it can just keep going and replenish itself pretty quickly.

If you go super hard and remove everything, the tree is going to have to dig deep into its reserve energy supplies, and this is simply going to take a longer to replenish and get the tree back to the same level of health again.

It Depends On The Species

Recovery time can also depend on the species, some species are just more vigorous than others and will respond more aggressively to your pruning.

Over time you will start to get a feel for what is normal for you particular species, which will help let you know if you tree is recovered or not.

It Depends On The Weather

The weather will play a role in a trees recovery from pruning, you could also call this the time of year, but really a tree is going to respond and recover a lot faster when the weather is good.

If you are pruning in the middle of winter, its cold and your tree will be dormant, so nothing is going to happen.

However, if you where to prune in the early summer, the tree should bounce back pretty quickly. It is going to be nice and warm and there will be plenty of light to recharge the tree back to full health.

I think saying “weather” is more applicable here, rather than time of year, as while the summer in general may be a better time to prune your trees, we will all experience a different type of summer from each other and even from year to year.

Where I live is quite mild. It’s never too sunny and it’s never too hot and the new growth I get after pruning is about average. However, I do grow some trees inside under a grow light, so they are a little warmer and certainly get a lot more “sun” …these trees respond a lot differently. The difference is really noticeable. They will just explode with new growth and be ready to work again within a few weeks. Their recover time is significantly faster.

I do imagine there is a limit to this, where getting too much light and heat will actually negatively affect them, but I am sure that will only be a few extreme locations. Basically the more ideal the weather conditions, the better your tree will recover.

Aftercare Matters Too

Once you have pruned you tree, how you care for it afterwards can affect how well it responds. Really the care will look pretty similar to normal, but the subtle differences can be enough to speed up its recovery.

You will need to check how much water it needs (which is something you should be doing anyway) and you might find that this has changed, especially if you have pruned it hard.

You may also need to slightly shelter some of the new delicate foliage too, if the sun is particularly strong in your area.

Your tree has been weakened, so you do not want to weaken it further and good aftercare can make the difference between a strong recovery and struggling to survive.

Your Tree Will Respond Differently Throughout The Year

All of the points above basically result in your tree having so many factors affecting it, that no two recoveries will be the same.

You could prune your tree at one point and it will take a few weeks to recover. You could prune it again and it might take a few months to recover. There really is no guaranteed pattern.

Any one of the things I have discussed above could affect the tree differently and it means the recover times will vary.

So long as your tree was healthy and you are continuing to care for it properly afterwards, it will recover. Whether that is quickly or slowly is down to the tree and there is nothing we can really do about that.

Conclusion

Hopefully now you have better understanding of how your tree should respond after you prune it and that there can be a number of different factors that can influence how long it can take to recover.

Basically if your tree is healthy, and you prune it at the right time of year, and then look after it properly afterwards …then it should recover quickly.

Don’t worry too much about how long it will take, and just focus on keeping it as healthy as you can. The tree will do what it needs to do it get back to full health.
